Will-Josh Njeumi is a Cameroonian-American music producer and DJ from the DMV (now based in Jersey). He possesses a love for hip hop, neo-soul, house, and traditional African music and aims to capture those elements in his art while incorporating themes of Black radicalism, Pan-Africanism, and Black liberation. His music centers on Black Freedom and he describes that: “Musically, I want the sound to be soulful and militant, and to be able to capture the ambivalent emotions that one feels in the fight for our freedom: rage, grief, nihilism, doubt, joy, enthusiasm, pride, optimism, and most importantly, love.” In photographing Will-Josh, I aimed to capture an image of Black Men in hip-hop that goes against the stereotypical mainstream images of “thugs” and “gangsters”. While my work aims to help Black men reclaim their identities and images, I hope that hip-hop can be reclaimed from the mainstream as well.
